Colby Reunion Weekend Begins Friday

More than 1,500 Colby graduates from the 1920s to the 1990s will participate in the college's 2003 Reunion Weekend from Friday, June 6, through Sunday, June 8. Saturday, June 7, at 11 a.m. alumni will march in the parade of classes. The following reunion events on Saturday are open to the public free of charge:

2 p.m.
The 2004 Elections, A Preview. Anthony J. Corrado, professor of government, presents a discussion of the 2004 election, offering an early look at how the race is shaping up. Room 100, Lovejoy Building.

James "Huey" Coleman '70 will show clips from and discuss the making of his feature-length documentary Wilderness and Spirit, A Mountain Called Katahdin. Room 105, Keyes Science Building.

Traveling the World with Poetry. Poet Gary Lawless '73 has given poetry readings in Italy, Slovenia, Latvia, Lithuania and the United States. He is the author of Caribouddhism, In Ruins and other poetry collections. Room 105, Seeley G. Mudd Science Building.

Writing Mysteries. Gerry Boyle '78, mystery novelist, editor of Colby magazine and former newspaper reporter, will discuss his forthcoming mystery novel, Pretty Dead, set on the Maine coast and in Boston. Room 14, Miller Library.

Imagining the Past. Jane Brox '78, author of the nonfiction book Five Thousand Days Like This One, will discuss the challenges and surprises of using historical material as a focus for the personal essay. Room 5, Arey Life Sciences Building.

3 p.m.
Readings featuring English Professor Emeritus Charles Bassett and English Professor Jennifer Finney Boylan. Given Auditorium, Bixler Art and Music Center.

Soccer Rules for Fans and Family. Mark Serdjenian '73, Colby's varsity men's soccer coach for 27 years, has worked extensively with youth coaches and soccer programs at all levels. Room 5, Arey Life Sciences Building.

Television Network News: A Second Education. Susan Gernert Adams '78 is a four-time Emmy Award-winning television producer who's traveled extensively for the past 20 years covering stories for ABC and NBC News. She will share her experience and insights into the changing world of the television news magazine. Room 1, F.W. Olin Science Center.

Obesity as Epidemic: The Public Health Response. Barbara Leonard '83, director of the Division of Community Health, Maine Bureau of Health, will talk about the recent rapid increase in obesity throughout the country, as well as national and Maine activities to address this important public health issue. Room 14, Miller Library.

3-4:30 p.m.
Colby author book signing. Bruce Blanchard '58 will sign Please Listen While I Think, I’m a Vermonter. James "Huey" Coleman '70 will sell his film Wilderness and Spirit, A Mountain Called Katahdin. Gary Lawless '73 will sign Caribouddhism and In Ruins. Jane Brox '78 will sign Five Thousand Days Like This One and Here and Nowhere Else. Gerry Boyle '78 will sign copies of all his mysteries: Borderline, Cover Story, Deadline, Bloodline, Potshot and Lifeline. Marchese Pub, Cotter Union.

Friday night the Alumni Association will present awards. Susan Comeau '63 (Wellesley, Mass.) will receive the Ernest C. Marriner Distinguished Service Award. Joseph F. Boulos '68 (Falmouth, Maine) will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Thomas P. LaVigne '58 (Worcester, Mass.), G. Arthur Brennan '68 (York, Maine), Robert E. Diamond Jr. '73 (London, England), Sally Lovegren Merchant '83 (Mount Desert, Maine) and William Violette (Waterville, Maine) will receive Colby Brick Awards. Beverly N. Madden '80 (Dover, Mass.) will receive the Edson V. Mitchell '75 Distinguished Service Award.
