25 Years of Piano Institute at Colby Celebrated with Two Concerts and Lecture
On Monday, July 7, at 7:30 p.m., Anthony di Bonaventura, founder and director of the Piano Institute at Colby, will perform a concert in Colby's Given Auditorium in the Bixler Art and Music Center on the Waterville campus. Concert admission is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. All proceeds directly benefit the institute’s scholarship fund. Di Bonaventura will perform five pieces from Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet," four sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, and Spanish dances by Enrique Granados. The program also will include "Three Pieces for Piano" by Peter R�e9;, Colby professor of music, emeritus. On Saturday, July 12, at 7:30 p.m. a special concert with Timothy Blair, Fabio Parrini and Konstantinos Papadakis, alumni of the Piano Institute at Colby, will be held in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center. The concert program will include selections from Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Haydn and Liszt. Concert admission is $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. All proceeds directly benefit the institute's scholarship fund. Timothy Blair is Dean of the School of Music at West Chester University. His recent performances include solo recitals in the famed Holywell Music Room in Oxford, England, and Steinway Hall in New York. Recently Blair was named an official Steinway Artist by Steinway and Sons. He is a member of the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia and a member of the Board of Directors of the Samuel Barber Foundation. Fabio Parrini is Associate Professor of Music and Piano Program Coordinator at North Greenville College in South Carolina. He regularly performs solo and chamber music recitals in Italy and the United States, including concerto appearances with Italian orchestras, the Heritage Chamber Orchestra and the Greenville Symphony Chamber Orchestra. He has performed for the Italian National Radio (Rome) and the German Swiss Radio (Zurich). He won first prize at the national piano competitions of Galatina, Osimo and Cagliari, and at Boston University's Richmond Competition. Konstantinos Papadakis, a native of Crete, graduated from the Athens Conservatory of Music with honors and received the Golden Medal as an outstanding pianist. Papadakis has performed in numerous concert halls in Europe, Russia, the United States and Canada with noted artists, musical ensembles and orchestras. In 2000 he received the Esther and Albert Kahn Career Entry Award from Boston University’s School for the Arts. He is currently an associate professor of piano at Boston University. On Tuesday, July 15, at 10 a.m. Richard Dyer, music critic for The Boston Globe, will present a lecture on classical music. It will be held in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center. The event is open to the public and free of charge. The Piano Institute at Colby, scheduled for July 6 to 19, is a two-week program of intensive study that includes master classes and private lessons, with emphasis on technique, interpretation and repertoire. Participants listen to guest lecturers from the contemporary music world and have the opportunity to perform in several final public concerts. The Piano Institute has no age limitations and the student body is international in scope. Many alumni have gone on to performing careers and teaching positions in colleges and universities in the United States and abroad. Internationally recognized pianist di Bonaventura founded the Institute at Colby in 1979 and has been the director since its beginning. Di Bonaventura has performed in 27 countries and was featured in the Great Performances Series at New York's Lincoln Center. A professor of music at Boston University, di Bonaventura was awarded the Metcalf Cup and Prize for Excellence, Boston University's highest award for excellence in teaching, in 1992.
