Corwin Named Lunder Curator at Colby Museum Sharon Corwin will become the first Lunder Curator of American Art at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, on August 1. As curator Corwin will organize exhibitions and educational programs aimed at students, faculty and community members from all disciplines. Corwin is a scholar of American art with an expertise in early American modernism and a deep interest in contemporary movements. "Sometimes you find a happy complement in which the candidate is perfect for the position and the position is perfect for the candidate. I think this is one of these ideal occasions," said Daniel Rosenfeld, the Carolyn Muzzy Director of the Colby College Museum of Art. "With her addition, we will continue to fulfill the museum’s legacy as one of the most prominent, innovative and energetic institutions of its kind." Corwin is currently a faculty fellow in art history at the University of California, Berkeley. Her teaching and research focus on issues in American modern and contemporary art. She earned her Ph.D. in art history in 2001 and her master's degree in art history in 1995, both from the University of California, Berkeley. Her Ph.D. dissertation was on "Selling 'America': Precisionism and the Rhetoric of Industry, 1916-1939." Corwin earned her bachelor's degree in 1992 from New College of Florida. Corwin previously has worked at Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, Calif., the John Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Fla. The Lunder Curator of American Art position is endowed by Peter and Paula Lunder of Waterville and Scarborough, Maine. Peter Lunder is an overseer and 1956 graduate of Colby. Paula Lunder is a trustee. Both hold honorary degrees from Colby. Founded in 1959, The Colby College Museum of Art has a diverse permanent collection that includes 18th-century American portraits, 19th-century landscapes and a wide selection of 20th-century and contemporary American artwork. The museum houses the John Marin Collection and also features the Paul J. Schupf Wing for the Art of Alex Katz. Colby's permanent collection includes works by John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Cole, George Inness, Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Fairfield Porter, Marsden Hartley, Rockwell Kent, Richard Serra, Sol LeWitt and Robert Rauschenberg. |
