Family Homecoming Weekend Includes Public Events
Friday, October 6, through Sunday, October 8, is Family Homecoming Weekend at Colby College and many events on the campus in Waterville are open to the public. All events listed are free of charge.
At 8 p.m. Friday, Professor of History Richard Moss will present the inaugural lecture of the John J. and Cornelia V. Gibson Chair in
History. "The Rise and Fall of the American Country Club" will be presented in the Robins Room of Roberts Building.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, the Colby Craft Fair will be held in the field house of the Harold Alfond Athletic Center. The work of more than 85 crafters will be featured.
At 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Lee Family Professor of English Cedric Bryant will present "Beginnings and Endings: The Narrative Practice of Reading and Writing Backwards" in room 100 of Lovejoy Building.
At 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Associate Professor of Chemistry D. Whitney King will present "Good Old-Fashioned Chemical Magic to the Magic of Modern Chemistry: The Story of Alchemy to Rational Drug Design" in room 105 of Keyes Building.
At 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jian-li Yang, a major leader of the Chinese democracy movement, will be the guest lecturer for the 2000 Ralph J. Bunche Symposium. The lecture will be in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Jian-li was protesting in Tiananmen Square in 1989 when hundreds of unarmed pro-democracy students were massacred. (207.872.3104)
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi will perform in Lorimer Chapel. A native of Foggia, Italy, Pompa-Baldi has given recitals and concerto performances internationally and was the first-prize winner in the 1999 Cleveland International Piano Competition. (207.872.3236)
"Modernism & Abstraction: Treasures from the Smithsonian American Art Museum" is on view at the Colby College Museum of Art through October 29. The 70 major paintings and sculptures show the radical transformations of American art in the 20th century as seen in works by Georgia O’Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Stuart Davis, Franz Kline and others. The museum, home to an outstanding permanent collection, is open extended hours 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. View 20th-century works from the
