Colby Announces Fall Visiting Writers Series Colby College's 2003-04 Visiting Writers Series will include three book readings this fall on the Waterville campus. Each program will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to the public free of charge. A book signing by the author will follow each of the readings. The Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by Colby's creative writing program. On Tuesday, September 30, in the Robins Room of Roberts Building, Colby professor of English Jennifer Finney Boylan will read from her tender and funny memoir, She’s Not There: A Life In Two Genders. "She's Not There, the Running With Scissors of sex-change stories, brings irreverence and a merrily outrageous sense of humor to this potentially serious business," wrote the New York Times. "There's quite a story here. Boylan tells it with disarming humor and a sharp eye for some of the absurdities of her situation." Boylan is also the author of several works of fiction, including the comic novels The Planets and The Constellations and the short story collection Remind Me to Murder You Later. On Tuesday, October 14, in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center, mystery writer and Boston-native Dennis Lehane will read selections of his fiction. His New York Times bestseller Mystic River was a finalist for the PEN/Winship Award and won both the Anthony Award and the Barry Award for Best Novel as well as the Massachusetts Book Award in Fiction given by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. Clint Eastwood recently made the film version of the novel, starring Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon. The most recent of Lehane's seven psychological thrillers is Shutter Island. On Tuesday, November 18, in the Robins Room of Roberts Building, Laura Kasischke will read from her works. The author of five collections of poetry and three novels, Kasischke is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, three Pushcart Prizes and the Alice Faye DiCastagnola Prize from the Poetry Society of America. Kasischke's most recent novel is The Life Before Her Eyes and her latest collection of poems, Dance and Disappear, won the Juniper Prize for Poetry awarded by the University of Massachusetts Press. |
