Food Historian Riley to Speak at Colby, October 31 On Tuesday, October 31, food historian Gillian Riley will give a lecture at Colby College on the influence of culinary arts in 18th-century Spanish painting. The lecture, "What’s Cooking in the Calle del Reloj?: A New Look at the Content of the Still-Life Paintings of Luis Mel�e9;ndez," will be held at 7:30 p.m. in room 154 of Bixler Art and Music Center. The event is co-sponsored by the Colby art and women’s studies departments and is open to the public free of charge. Riley is a designer and a historian and translator of gastronomic literature. Her interest in typography and the culinary past began while studying history at the University of Cambridge. Riley is a regular contributor to the Oxford Symposium on Food and Cooking and the London Food Seminar. Among her publications are A Feast for the Eyes (1997), Renaissance Recipes (1993), Impressionist Picnics (1992), The Dutch Table (1994), and her translation of Giacomo Castelvetro’s The Fruit, Herbs and Vegetables of Italy (1989).
