Colby Museum to Hold Student Gallery Lectures

The Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville will hold a series of lectures this fall by Colby students in the museum's docent program. The Student Docent Gallery Lecture Series provides an opportunity to learn more about works of art in the museum’s extensive permanent collection from students who conducted independent research on a chosen topic. All talks begin in the museum lobby. The series is open to the public and free of charge.

  • On Thursday, October 23, at 6 p.m. Amanda Robinson '04 will present a talk on the Ash Can artist, Robert Henri's La Reina Mora (1906).

  • On Thursday, October 30, at 6 p.m. Sarah Kaplan '06 will present a talk on American impressionist Mary Cassatt's portrait Meditation (1906).

  • On Friday, October 31, at 12:15 p.m. Leah Weisberg '06 will present a talk on Chansonetta Stanley Emmons, an early 20th-century photographer and Maine native.

  • On Monday, November 3, at 12:15 p.m. Cathy White '06 will present a talk on American landscape painting and Rackstraw Downes's Garbage Arriving at Fresh Kills (1990).

  • On Wednesday, November 12, at 12:15 p.m. Mary Phelps '04 will present a talk on Yvonne Jaquette's Maine landscape painting Town of Skowhegan (1988).

  • On Friday, November 14, at 12:15 p.m. Kate Russo '04 will present a talk on John Marin and The Stieglitz Circle of artists.

  • On Friday, November 21, at 12:15 p.m. Anne Olmsted '04 will present a talk on race and gender in Kara Walker's The Gift (1997).

  • On Friday, December 5, at 12:15 p.m. Tucker Burr '06 will present a talk on Albert Bierstadt's Chimney Rock (1860).

  • On Thursday, December 11, at 12:15 p.m. Alex Gershuny '04 will present a talk on the Baroque painting of St. Jerome.

    The Colby College Museum of Art has a diverse permanent collection that includes 18th-century American portraits, 19th-century landscapes and a wide selection of 20th-century and contemporary American artwork. The museum houses the John Marin Collection, the largest holding of Marin's work in any academic museum in the country, and also features the Paul J. Schupf Wing for the Art of Alex Katz.

    Colby museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. The museum is closed October 28 through November 8 while the Cherished Possessions: A New England Legacy exhibit is dismantled and crated for its national tour; gallery lectures during that time will be held in the museum lobby.
