Colby Presents The Man of Mode, Nov. 14-15 and 21-22

Colby College's Department of Theater and Dance will present a 21st-century interpretation of Sir George Etherege's cynical 17th-century comedy The Man of Mode on November 14, 15, 21 and 22. The play is part of the college's 2003-04 Theater and Dance season. Performances will be held beginning at 7:30 p.m. nightly in Strider Theater of Runnals Building on the Waterville campus. Admission is charged.

Directed by Caroline England, Colby's Irving D. Suss Visiting Guest Artist in Residence, The Man of Mode is a comedy about the decadence, glamour and hedonism of 17th-century London and the conflict between town and country. The play features rakish heroes who value wit and manners above morality and examines whether a morally suspect man-about-town can be tamed by an intelligent, beautiful and witty woman from the country.

Guito Joseph '04 will play the lead role of Mr. Dorimant, opposite Kate Campbell '05 as Harriet Woodvill. Dressed from head to toe in the latest Paris fashions Jani Jung is Sir Fopling Flutter, the original Restoration fop.

The performance, a 21st-century interpretation of the 17th-century comedy, will use techniques practiced by leading British physical theater companies to explore the extravagant world of the play. Costume designer Pamela Scofield mixes the high fashion of contemporary New York and Paris with the decadence of 17th-century London. Director England is a visiting lecturer at Goldsmith's College University of London, the Royal Academy of Music and London Contemporary Dance Theatre School.

General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on upcoming productions visit the Theater and Dance Web site at www.colby.edu/theater.
