Tietenberg to Present Environmental Policy Lecture at Colby Nov. 10 On Monday, November 10, Tom Tietenberg, Colby professor of economics and environmental studies and an international expert on environmental economics, will present the lecture "Market-Based Approaches to Environmental Protection: Faustian Bargain or Paradise Regained?" at Colby College in Waterville. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. It is open to the public and free of charge. Tietenberg has more than 30 years of experience designing and evaluating environmental policies for the United Nations, the World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the United States Agency for International Development, the Environmental Protection Agency and state and foreign governments. Tietenberg will examine whether the "pendulum effect"--when policy innovations are initially underutilized and later, because of familiarity, accorded too much respect--has occurred with market-based environmental policy instruments. Tietenberg is Colby's Mitchell Family Professor of Economics and director of the environmental studies program. He is the author or editor of 11 books and more than 100 articles and essays on environmental and natural resource economics, including Environmental and Natural Resources Economics, one of the best selling textbooks in the field. In 1990 he was named "Maine Professor of the Year" by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He is a former president of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. Tietenberg's talk is the inaugural event for the Hollis Lecture Series at Colby, which is supported by an endowed fund provided by the Hollis Foundation. The lectures bring nationally recognized practitioners and scholars to Colby to present their views on major issues in the interdisciplinary field of environmental studies. |
