Recognized Architect to Lecture on Design Nov. 20

On Thursday, November 20, at 7:30 p.m. architect Will Bruder will present the 34th annual Clara M. Southworth Lecture in Environmental Design at Colby College. Bruder's lecture, "reflections on the journey," will be held in room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center on the Waterville campus. Bruder, educated as a sculptor and self-trained as an architect, is renowned for his creative use of materials and for demonstrating that light is one of the key tools of an architect. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

Based in Phoenix, Ariz., Bruder recently designed the New School for the Arts in Tempe, Ariz., the Phoenix Public Library and The Nevada Museum of Art. He currently is working on a project for the Portland Public Library in Maine. He was an apprentice to renowned architects Paolo Soleri and Gunnar Birkerts during the formative phases of his architectural development. "Truly memorable buildings exploit the tension between the sensual and the intellectual, strive for the balance of the poetic and pragmatic, and search for elusive qualities, both timely and timeless," said Bruder of his own work philosophy.

Bruder's work is considered at once site specific and universal, opportune and eternal, narrative and abstract. In a New York Times review Harrison S. Fraker Jr., Dean of the College of Environmental Design at the University of California at Berkeley, said the Phoenix Public Library "is one of the most important American buildings of the end of the 20th century. It seems to capture deep and core qualities of a place without imitating historical style."

Bruder is the recipient of the Chrysler Design Award, the Academy Award in Architecture and a National Design Award. He recently was the William Henry Bishop Professor at Yale, the Thomas Jefferson Chair at the University of Virginia, visiting critic at Washington University in St. Louis and visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been honored as Educator of the Year by the Arizona chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
