Death of Dawn Rossignol '04 Stuns Colby Community

On Wednesday, September 17, the Colby community received news from the Maine State Police that Dawn Rossignol, a senior from Medway, Maine, had been found dead at a location about a mile from the campus. The police report labeled the death "suspicious" and her death was subsequently ruled a homicide.

Her death is a profound loss for Colby, and many of Dawn's fellow students and members of the faculty and administration who had studied, taught, and worked alongside Dawn are grief stricken, struggling to cope with a tragedy of this proportion.

At the same time Colby struggles to deal with Dawn's death, many on campus have expressed their heartfelt concern and sympathy for the Rossignol family, which has lost a bright, industrious, loving daughter and sister. To her parents, Emilio and Charleen, and to her brother, Michael, I extend my profound sympathy and the support of the College.

A major investigation of Dawn's death is currently under way, led by the Maine State Police. Colby is cooperating with these efforts and appreciates the thoroughness of the law enforcement agencies and the support and assistance that they are providing to the College and the surrounding community.

We have established a Web site (www.colby.edu/president/news) to convey as expeditiously as possible information about that investigation and other developments related to Dawn's death. Links provide access to a variety of communications: notices from Colby's administration, official statements from the Maine State Police regarding the investigation, information about safety and security concerns, access to counseling and other services, and other related notices.

Many of the most recent communications about the case and safety and security concerns of the College are posted on the web site. We hope that providing information is helpful as Colby tries to deal with this terrible loss.
