Maine Crafts on Exhibit at Colby Museum
This exhibition presents a selection of work by 40 innovative and diverse artists. For 20/20 enVision MCA's 20th Anniversary Exhibition Committee invited 20 of Maine's finest established craft artists whose work continues to be innovative and exciting. Each of these 20 was asked to invite an emerging artist whose work reflected the same standards of quality workmanship, design and innovation. The 40 artists in the show work in a variety of media including textiles, clay, glass, wood, thread and mixed media. The artists come from across the state, from towns including Solon, Bangor, Northeast Harbor, Portland and Appleton.
Also on view at the museum is the annual fall faculty exhibition and MATRIX 203: Memorial Project Vietnam. Colby museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. The development and future of crafts in Maine will be on view at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville December 7 through January 25 in the Maine Crafts Association (MCA)'s 20th anniversary exhibition, 20/20 enVision. The exhibit includes works by established and emerging craft artists. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, December 14, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and the public is invited.
MCA has a rich history within the community of craft makers and craft lovers across the state. Founded in 1983, MCA is dedicated to bringing understanding and appreciation to the art of craft in Maine, and it continues to champion the work and encourage the creativity of Maine craftspeople. "It is an honor to be able to join with the Colby College Museum of Art to celebrate what the rest of the nation recognizes as a wealth of talented artists whose lively and energetic work has made a lasting mark in the arts," said Gael May McKibben, executive director of MCA and curator of the exhibition.
20/20 enVision is accompanied by a 48-page catalogue with an essay by Carl Little, author of numerous articles and books about Maine craft artists and Maine art. In February the exhibition will travel to the Gallery at the University of New England in Portland.
