Music and Events Celebrate Martin Luther King at Colby Gospel recording artists the Holmes Family will be artists-in-residence at Colby College in Waterville January 19 to 23 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Events will include lectures, a civil rights celebration, gospel workshops and a concert open to all community members. The four-member group the Holmes Family is known for its beautiful harmonic sound and is committed to community building and social justice. All of the events are open to the public and free of charge. Monday, January 19, at 4:30 p.m. a Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. and Civil Rights will be held in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Guest speakers include Marilyn Pukkila, an ordained priestess, and several Colby and Waterville community members. Colby students will read original poetry, and the Holmes Family will perform. Tuesday, January 20, at 3 p.m. Pastor Rev. Karen Holmes will present "Ethiopian Skin—Ethnicity, Sex and Gender in the Bible." Karen Holmes, vocalist, songwriter and spiritual leader of the Holmes Family, has been an ordained preacher since 1972. The event will be held in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union and a reception will follow. Wednesday, January 21, at 3 p.m. Kimberly and Kari Holmes will present "They Change the World Everyday." Their presentation will focus on local and national change by multicultural groups of students, youths and young adults. Kimberly Holmes is a lyricist, composer and arranger. She wrote "He Helped Me Climb The Mountain," one of the group's most requested songs, when she was 12 years old. Kari Holmes is a songwriter and vocalist. The event will be held in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. Thursday, January 22, and Friday, January 23, at 3 p.m. singer-songwriter Ian Holmes will present the two-part choir workshop "Voices United." The workshops will be held in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union and are open to all interested community members; no experience is necessary. Participants will perform in a concert on January 23. Ian Holmes is an accomplished pianist, vocalist, composer and choir director. He has won numerous awards and recently toured with Latin Grammy nominee Maria Del Rey. Friday, January 23, at 7 p.m. the Holmes Family and Colby and Waterville community members will perform in the gospel concert "Voices United.” The concert will be held in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. The program will include original music intertwined with African rhythms, Negro spirituals, music of the civil rights movement and contemporary urban styles. |
