Colby Celebrates Martin Luther King with Concerts, Lectures and Talks
Colby College in Waterville will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a weeklong schedule of gospel and drumming concerts, lectures and films. All events are open to the public and free of charge.
Monday, January 19
At 4:30 p.m. a Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. and Civil Rights will be held in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Gospel recording artists the Holmes Family will perform. Guest speakers include Marilyn Pukkila, an ordained priestess, and several Colby and Waterville community members. (207-872-3104)
At 7 p.m. master drummer Jordan Benissan, an applied music associate in Colby's Department of Music, and his band Sankofa will perform a concert of West African traditional drumming and highlife music in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center. (207-872-3279)
At 7:30 p.m. part one of two of The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow will be shown in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. The film won the 2003 Peabody Award and looks at race relations in America between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement. Part two of The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow will be shown Tuesday, January 20, at 7:30 p.m. (207-872-3133)

At 3 p.m. Rev. Karen Holmes will present "Ethiopian Skin--Ethnicity, Sex and Gender in the Bible" in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. (207-872-3104)

At 3 p.m. Kimberly and Kari Holmes will present "They Change the World Everyday" in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. Their presentation will focus on local and national change by multicultural groups of students, youths and young adults. (207-872-3104)
At 7:30 p.m. From Swastikas to Jim Crow, a PBS documentary on Black-Jewish relations, will be shown in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. (207-872-3133)
Thursday, January 22
At 3 p.m. singer-songwriter Ian Holmes will present part one of the two-part choir workshop "Voices United" in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union. The workshops are open to all interested community members; no experience is necessary. Participants will perform in a concert on January 23. (207-872-3104)
At 7:30 p.m. filmmaker Nancy Kates will present the lecture "The Making of Brother Outsider: The Untold True Story of Bayard Rustin" in Room 01 of the F.W. Olin Science Center. Kates made the documentary Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, about civil rights leader Rustin, who was responsible for connecting the Montgomery Bus Boycott to other nonviolent movements and was the coordinator for the 1963 March on Washington. His contributions often are obscured by the homophobia and red-baiting that surrounded his life. A film viewing will follow. (207-872-3133)
