Colby Presents Sondheim's Company, Feb. 6-8 and 12-14
Company, with music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by George Furth, revolutionized Broadway in 1970 by introducing the "concept musical." Its plot centers on Robert (Canaan Morse '07 of Manchester, Maine) who has a problem with commitment. He's dating a lot of nice people--New York is full of them--but all his married friends want to see him march to the altar. Company reveals Robert's inner thoughts as he tries to make sense of the friendships and romances in his life. The musical contains such classic Sondheim compositions as "Side by Side by Side," "Ladies Who Lunch," "Sorry-Grateful" and "Company." The production is a collaboration between Colby's Department of Theater and Dance and Department of Music. Colby's cast of 20 includes Maine seniors Aim�e9;e Jack (Lewiston), Chrissy Jones (Freeport), Greg Cary (Cumberland) and Rachel Tobie (Mount Vernon) and an orchestra of 10 student instrumentalists, with Colby alumnus Eric Laurits '02 on baritone saxophone. Laura Chakravarty Box, assistant professor of theater and dance, directs Company and Paul Machlin, the Arnold Bernhard Professor of Arts and Humanities, provides musical direction. Actors, orchestra members, student designers and crew members developed the production in an intensive four-week workshop during Colby's January Program. Company is intended for teen and adult audiences. General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2.
