Jews and Rock 'n' Roll Lecture February 11

On Wednesday, February 11, Glenn Altschuler, professor of American studies at Cornell and author of All Shook Up: How Rock 'n' Roll Changed America, will speak about "Jews and Rock 'n' Roll." The 7 p.m. talk, Colby College's annual Lipman Lecture, will be held in the Pugh Center of Cotter Union on the Waterville campus. It is open to the public and free of charge.

Altschuler, Cornell's Thomas and Dorothy Litwin Professor of American Studies, has served as Dean of the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions at Cornell since 1991. His yearlong course on American popular culture is among the most popular at the university.

Altschuler is the author of numerous books and other publications, including All Shook Up: How Rock 'n' Roll Changed America (2003), Rude Republic: Americans and Their Politics in the 19th Century (2000), Changing Channels: America in TV Guide (1992) and Race, Ethnicity, and Class in American Social Thought, 1865-1919 (1982). For four years he wrote a column on higher education for the Education Life section of the New York Times. He is currently a regular panelist on national and international affairs for the WCNY television program "The Ivory Tower Half-Hour."

Altschuler received his Ph.D. in American history from Cornell in 1976 and has been an administrator and teacher at Cornell since 1981. He has won several awards for teaching and undergraduate advising.

The Lipman Lecture, presented annually at Colby, was endowed by Bernard Harry Lipman '31 and is devoted to the advancement of Jewish studies at Colby. Lipman's papers, which include rare photographs of Colby dating back to 1924, are currently on display in the Colbiana Room in Miller Library. The Colbiana Room was a gift to the college from Lipman, in honor of his favorite professor, Alfred Chapman.
