Patches and Tschanz Perform Chopin February 22

Mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Erskine Patches and pianist Cheryl Tschanz will present "Fre9;de9;ric Chopin: His Life, his Letters, His Music" on Sunday, February 22, at Colby College. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center on the Waterville campus. Part of the 2003-04 Music at Colby Concert Series, it is open to the public and free of charge.

Through music and words Patches and Tschanz will provide a historical perspective on Chopin, who is regarded as a quintessentially nationalistic composer whose music belongs to the world. Patches and Tschanz will juxtapose Chopin's songs and piano compositions with readings from his correspondence.

Patches, an applied music associate at Colby, is renowned for her work in the Polish repertory. She sang the American premiere of all of Chopin's songs at Tully Hall in Lincoln Center in 1976. Subsequently she was invited to be an artist-in-residence in Poland under the auspices of the Polish Ministry of Culture. There she gave more than 80 concerts in a six-month period and recorded extensively. Following the enormous success of that tour, she was offered an immediate return tour within the same season. The press wrote, "Few American artists have been greeted with such whole-hearted acclaim in any country as Elizabeth Patches in Poland. Her concerts were nothing short of sensational.

Tschanz, an adjunct associate professor of music at Colby, made her major orchestral debut with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11. She has performed on the piano throughout the United States, Canada, France, Italy and Finland and has performed in New York's Lincoln Center and Carnegie Recital Hall.
