She-Who-Loves Performed at Colby Feb. 26-28
Based on a Comanche Indian legend, She-Who-Loves is told in a style inspired by Japanese Noh drama, an ancient form of masked theater. The production features actress Carol Farrell, dancer Mia Kanazawa, exquisitely carved puppets and live musicians Andrea Goodman and Carl Dimow, applied music associate at Colby. She-Who-Loves tells the story of a young girl who saves her village from a devastating drought through love and personal sacrifice. With an opening scene of tiny stone animals disappearing below the sand and another with the Ghost of the Mother scattering blue petals on her sleeping child, the piece has an otherworldly, meditative quality. Puppetry International magazine described She-Who-Loves as, "a piece of surpassing beauty... which exists at the intersection of Art and Nature, of Earth and Spirit."
Founded in 1982, Figures of Speech Theatre is a performing group based in Freeport, Maine. The company has toured nationally to Broadway, the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center, and internationally to Japan, Europe and South America. General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2.
