Colby Announces Spring Visiting Writers Series Colby College's 2003-04 Visiting Writers Series will hold three readings this spring on the Waterville campus. Each program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Robins Room of Roberts Building and is open to the public free of charge. A book signing by the authors will follow each of the readings. On Tuesday, March 9, Lan Samantha Chang will read from her short stories. The Briggs-Copeland Lecturer in Fiction at Harvard University, Chang is the author of the short story collection Hunger and the forthcoming novel Sanctuary. Chang's debut book, Hunger, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was called a "vivid, deeply original vision of Asian-American life," by Kirkus Reviews. On Monday, March 29, Scott Russell Sanders will read from his nonfiction works. Sanders is the author of 18 books of nonfiction, fiction and stories for children. He writes about nature, the work of social justice, the practice of community and the search for a spiritual path. His most recent books include The Country of Language and The Force of Spirit. Sanders has been honored with fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lilly Endowment and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1995 his collected work in nonfiction received a Lannan Literary Award. On Thursday, April 22, Honoree F. Jeffers will read selections of her poetry. These poems "are gospel, indeed, and this young poet will be heard more and more, spreading the true word," said poet Lucille Clifton of Jeffers's first volume of poetry, The Gospel of Barbecue. Jeffers's second collection, Outlandish Blues, is a mixture of history, song and African-American culture. Booklist said, "Jeffers' musical and forthright lyrics cut to the chase in their descriptions of self-destructive love, treacherous family life, and sexual passion turned oppressive or violent." |
