Master Japanese String Musicians at Colby, March 6
Master singer and performer Yoko Hiraoka has been performing for almost 30 years. As a Jiuta singer she draws on literary sources, performing Japanese classical pieces from the early 17th century onwards. Hiraoka also will perform on the shamisen, a skin-covered lute. Her wide-ranging repertoire includes 20th-century contemporary works and avant-garde microtonal compositions and collaborations with Western musicians. Hiraoka will be joined by Kyokko Suga, one of the foremost masters of the ancient lute-like biwa instrument. Suga performs both solo and duet sung poems that draw on the legends and myths of ancient Japan. Now 75, Suga will soon inherit the ultimate accolade of "National Living Treasure" of Japan. Kai Motoshige will perform on the kokyu. For information about this year's schedule of Music at Colby events contact the Music Department at 207-872-3236. |
