Colby College and Maine Business Leaders Tackle Regionalization On Wednesday, March 24, more than 200 leaders from around Maine will convene at Colby College in Waterville to discuss the development and promotion of regional collaborations. The annual Colby Institute for Leadership, now in its 53rd year, will include keynote addresses by John Wood, the New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, and Michael Gallis, a leading expert on regional development. This year's Colby Institute for Leadership is part of a collaborative series with the Maine Development Foundation and the University of Southern Maine School of Business on ways to develop regional consensus. Following introductory remarks by Colby President William Adams, Wood will discuss how New Zealand has implemented regionalization. New Zealand Trade and Enterprise’s Regional Partnership Programme gives the country's 26 regions guidance and funding to develop and activate sustainable economic growth strategies and has had a positive economic impact. Gallis, a leading expert in large-scale regional development strategies, has helped public, private and institutional leaders create globally competitive regions. Gallis has led in-depth development programs for states, including Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey, as well as for regions, including Detroit, Memphis and western Michigan. Gov. John Baldacci will speak and present the 2004 Governor's Awards for Business Excellence at lunch.
