Christian Commentator Frederica Mathewes-Green at Colby April 28

Frederica Mathewes-Green will speak at Colby on Wednesday, April 28, at 7 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel. The title of her talk is "Does Character Matter?" The lecture and follow-up discussion are sponsored by Gail '62 and Allan Gerrish in an effort to raise student awareness of spiritual, moral and ethical issues.

Mathewes-Green, an acclaimed commentator, best-selling author and a dynamic speaker, is considered by many a beacon of hope in the polarized cultural dialogue. Her work on feminism and culture and, more recently, on early Christian spirituality brings a unique perspective to the subject of character.

She is a regular columnist for Beliefnet.com, a commentator on NPR, a book reviewer for the Los Angeles Times, and a contributor to Christianity Today and the National Review Online. She has written hundreds of articles in secular and religious periodicals and has been interviewed in national media including The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, Newsweek, Time, CNN, MSNBC and C-SPAN.

A feminist leader on her college campus, Mathewes-Green marched against war and in favor of abortion rights. Though she eagerly explored world religions, she despised Christianity and treated believers with contempt, she says. Then a "road to Damascus" experience launched a profound change in her life. She attended Episcopal seminary alongside her husband and acquired decades of experience as a pastor’s wife, counselor and teacher. She has three children and five grandchildren.

Her recent books include The Open Door: Entering the Sanctuary of Icons and Prayer (2003), Gender: Men, Women, Sex, Feminism (2002) and The Illumined Heart: The Ancient Christian Path of Transformation (2001). Mathewes-Green has spoken at most Ivy League colleges, the Aspen Institute, national conferences for the National Right to Life Committee, CareNet, Heartbeat, the Christian Legal Society, Family Research Council, and Focus on the Family, as well as dozens of pregnancy center and pro-life fundraisers.
