Shaw’s "Mrs. Warren's Profession" Performed, Nov. 16-18 The Department of Theater and Dance at Colby College in Waterville will present the play Mrs. Warren’s Profession by Irish dramatist George Bernard Shaw, November 16 through November 18. Performances will be held nightly Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater of Runnals Performing Arts Center. Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession is a comic melodrama of a stereotypical "fallen woman" and her well-educated daughter. The play’s action turns on the daughter’s discovery of her mother’s advancement in the "profession" to become an owner of several brothels. Though written in 1893, it was not performed until 1902 because of its controversial subject of organized prostitution. Richard Sewell, professor of theater and dance at Colby and founder of the Theater at Monmouth, will direct the performance. The two-hour show is recommended for mature teenagers and adults. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Shaw worked as a journalist before becoming one of Ireland’s most celebrated playwrights. Among his works are Major Barbara, Man and Superman and Pygmalion, which was later adapted into the musical My Fair Lady. His plays examine social dilemmas while maintaining a highly comic spirit. Shaw won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2.
