Colby Announces Chekhov Centenary Festival

Marking one hundred years since the death of Russian author and physician Anton Chekhov, Colby will present the Chekhov Centenary Festival October 6 through 9. The festival, which is supported by grants from the Maine Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, includes a number of films, live performances, and lectures.

Some highlights:

October 3, 6:30 p.m., Room 100, Lovejoy
Chekhov's Plays on Film
Video presentation of the Wooster Group’s avant-garde Brace Up! based on Chekhov’s Three Sisters as part of the Sunday night film series.

October 6, 7 p.m. lecture, 8 p.m. performance, Given Auditorium, Bixler Art Building
Chekhov's Biography Staged
A one-act play about Chekhov's life will be performed by Colby Theater and Dance Professor Emeritus Richard Sewell and actress Kim Gordon.

October 8, 4 p.m., Robins Room, Roberts Union
American Writers on Chekhov
Four contemporary writers, James McConkey, Claire Messud, Francine Prose, and James Wood, discuss Chekhov's influence on American letters and his place in their own writing practice.

October 8 - 9, 7:30 p.m., Strider Theater, Runnals Building
Performance of Gull
New York's LightBox presents this adaptation of Chekhov's The Seagull followed by a discussion with the director. Tickets are $3 and can be reserved at the box office, 207-872-3358.
