At Colby, Newspaper Editors from The Globe, Chicago Tribune and Oregonian Will Discuss Campaigns' Press Coverage

On Thursday, November 9, newspaper editors from The Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune and The Oregonian, and government professor Tony Corrado will discuss "The Role of the Media in Elections: Campaign Coverage 2000" in a panel discussion at Colby College in Waterville. The 1:30 p.m. event will be in the Robins Room on the second floor of the Roberts building (above the college bookstore). It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.

Tony Corrado, an associate professor of government at Colby, directs the Campaign Finance Institute, a nonpartisan policy organization based in Washington, D.C. He also has served as director of the Twentieth Century Fund Task Force on Presidential Debates. The three participating newspaper editors are members of Colby’s Lovejoy award selection committee. They are Ann Marie Lipinski, executive editor of the Chicago Tribune; Matthew V. Storin, editor of The Boston Globe; and William Hilliard, retired executive editor of The Oregonian.

At 8 p.m. Bill Kovach, chair of the Committee of Concerned Journalists, will receive the 48th Lovejoy journalism award at a formal convocation in Colby’s Lorimer Chapel. Since quitting daily journalism to protest a lack of editorial autonomy, Kovach has been a press watchdog and served as curator of The Nieman Foundation at Harvard University until June. He was called "the conscience of American journalism" by Editor & Publisher magazine. The convocation, featuring an address by Kovach, is open to the public.

This event has been cancelled as of Wednesday, November 8, 2000.
