Political Scientist Thomas Mann to Speak at Colby Sunday
Thomas E. Mann of The Brookings Institution, one of the most respected and oft-quoted commentators on national politics, will speak at Colby at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 24, in room 100 of the Lovejoy building. Just a week before the presidential election, Mann’s talk will be titled "Countdown 2004: What Will Washington Look Like in the Years Ahead?" The event, sponsored by the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement, is free and open to the public.
Mann is the W. Averell Harriman Chair and Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution. He has taught at Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown and American universities and at the University of Virginia. He conducted political polls for the Democratic Study Group Campaign Fund, served on the Democratic National Committee's Winograd and Hunt Commissions dealing with presidential selection and chaired the Board of Overseers of the National Election Studies. He is a regular contributor to newspaper stories and television and radio programs on politics and governance. At Colby he will draw on decades of expertise and experience to imagine Washington, D.C. as it will look after the November 2 election.
Mann has written or co-edited 13 books, including Unsafe at Any Margin: Interpreting Congressional Elections (1978), Media Polls in American Politics (1992) and The New Campaign Finance Sourcebook (2004). He has written numerous scholarly articles and opinion pieces on various aspects of American politics, including elections, political parties, Congress, the presidency and public policymaking. He is currently working on projects dealing with campaign finance reform (in the U.S. and in other democracies), election reform and the continuity of Congress.
