African-American Poet to Speak at Colby, Nov. 20 Monday, November 20, at Colby College in Waterville poet, essayist and political activist June Jordan will give an address in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Jordan will speak about her autobiography, Soldier: A Poet’s Childhood (2000). The 8 p.m. lecture is open to the public. Called a "feminist survivor with the eyes of a child" by the New York Times, Jordan grew up in Harlem and Brooklyn in the 1930s and ’40s. Jordan’s books of poetry include Haruko/Love Poems and Naming Our Destiny: New and Selected Poems. She is also the author of five children's books, a novel, three plays and five volumes of political essays. Her honors include a National Book Award nomination, a Rockefeller Foundation grant and a National Association of Black Journalists Award. A professor of African-American studies at the University of California, Berkeley, Jordan is also the founder of the university’s Poetry 4 the People program. The academic program blends a rigorous poetry curriculum with a commitment to political consciousness and activism. |
