Colby Symphony Orchestra Presents Communist Concertos

This year's Colby Symphony Orchestra concerts bring together a remarkable range of music that emerged from composers working in Eastern Europe under Communist regimes. The orchestra's season opener will pair one such work with an orchestral standard to present two sharply contrasting views of the concerto. The concert will be held on Saturday, October 30, at 7:30 p.m., in Given Auditorium, Bixler Art and Music Center, on the Waterville campus.

Toma Gaqi (father of Colby student Gjergji '07) wrote his Concerto for Strings during the most repressive years of the Communist regime in Albania. The work is an example of Gaqi's deft ability to tread the line between very traditional, party-approved music and the more progressive style in which he would have preferred to compose.

The second half of the concert will feature principal bassoonist Angela Capps in a performance of Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto in E minor. The concert will also include Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Ce9;sar Franck's sparkling Les Pre9;ludes.

The Colby Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Jonathan Hallstrom. For more information on the Music at Colby Concert Series, visit http://www.colby.edu/music./concerts.html
