Alex Katz Curates Exhibition of Contemporary Painting Opening at Colby June 27

Alex Katz, an artist of international renown who has dedicated himself to painting for more than half a century, takes a turn as museum curator this summer. Contemporary Painting: Curated by Alex Katz will be on view at the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine, June 27 through September 19. Katz has selected 22 works by eight contemporary painters from the U.S. and United Kingdom—artists who are among the most exciting working in the medium today. In the adjacent Paul J. Schupf Wing for the Art of Alex Katz, Colby has three galleries permanently dedicated to Katz's work.

The Contemporary Painting exhibition explores the vibrant genre of contemporary painting through the lens of one of the era's most prominent practitioners. "The painters in this exhibition make paintings which are involved in trying to define our culture visually," Katz said. “Art books, photographs, movies and other forms of graphic art have changed the way we see the world. All the artists in this exhibition are able to reinvent and transfer graphic art in a craft form and bring it into the present tense.”

Painters included in the exhibition are Richard Bosman, Cecily Brown, Maureen Cavanaugh, Peter Doig, Merlin James, Laura Owens, Elizabeth Peyton and Bill Saylor. Representing a variety of styles and generations, the artists range from emerging to seasoned, including several who have works in the current Whitney Museum of American Art's Biennial. A full-color catalogue will be produced with statements by Katz and each artist.

An extensive exhibition of Katz's own work is always on view at Colby in the Paul J. Schupf Wing for the Art of Alex Katz. Other exhibits planned this summer include Contemporary Highlights from the Permanent Collection, May 30-October 31; Sites Unseen: Photographic Visions of the Vernacular Landscape, June 20-October 10; and Artists Talk: Selections from the Skowhegan Lecture Archive , July 11-October 31.

Colby College Museum of Art hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities. For more information call 207-872-3228.
