Colby Presents In Divisiblunder, January 21-23

The Theater and Dance Department of Colby College presents a premiere, In Divisiblunder, January 21, 22, and 23. The play by Colby Professor Emeritus Richard Sewell will be performed at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in Cellar Theater of the Runnals Building on the Waterville campus. Admission is charged.

In this dark comedy, Wallace, a committed agent of Homeland Security, invades the home of Irene, a devout Christian. Could Irene’s church produce a weapon of mass destruction as intercepted emails suggest? Do they harbor an alien with a map to a site in Iraq? And what does cat food have to do with it? Wallace and Irene are both new to the losing side of the growing gulf between the rich and the underpaid; they threaten each other with torture and share a heartfelt concern for Irene’s erratic sister. The actors are Lindsay Begin ’05, Patrick Harner ’05, Aaron Stepka ’06, and Joerose Tharakan ’08.

Sewell, returning to Colby as a visiting guest artist, calls the play “As bizarre as current life. It’s a glimpse of our passion: patriotism versus fear of patriotism, religion versus skepticism, corporations versus individuals, scholarly detachment versus commitment. We need to laugh a little, even at dilemmas we flounder among.”

Sewell taught play writing as a member of Colby's Theater and Dance Department from 1974 to 2003 and was founding director of Maine's Theater At Monmouth. Recently Sewell’s adaptation of Nathan the Wise played in New York City and in Los Angeles, and his Masks of Rioclora will have a reading at New York's Abingdon Theater this spring.

General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2. Since seating is limited, reservations are suggested. For ticket information call the box office at 207-872-3358 between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday the week of the performance. Or call 207-872-3388 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
