Colby Sinfonietta Combines Best Musicians, Quirky Music

Concert cancelled due to weather Colby's most advanced orchestral musicians have been plucked from the symphony to form the Colby Sinfonietta, an elite group of 20 musicians who perform demanding 20th-century works unlikely to be heard elsewhere in Maine. This year's performance will take place on Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m., in the Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. The concert is free and the public is invited.

Conductor Jonathan Hallstrom created the Sinfonietta three years ago "to bring people into contact with this fantastic, sometimes very quirky, music," he said. The pieces to be performed, which were chosen because they represent a cross-section of the extraordinary diversity of 20th century musical styles, are Sophia Gubaidulina's Concordanza, Igor Stravinsky's Concertino for 12 Instruments, and John Adams' Shaker Loops. In a departure from a traditional concert, a discussion of this often misunderstood, underappreciated form of contemporary "art" music will follow.

Additional concerts scheduled in the Music at Colby series this spring, all in Lorimer Chapel, include:

Saturday, April 2, 7:30 p.m.
