Colby Leadership Institute Focuses on Sustainability

The 54th Colby College Leadership Institute, with the theme "Sustainability: Working in Maine," will be held on Wednesday, March 23, on Colby's campus in Waterville. Delivering the keynote address will be Ray Anderson, founder of the world's largest commercial carpet manufacturer, Interface, Inc. Anderson has developed a model of sustainability proving that profits need not trump responsibility.

The conference, which is geared to leaders in Maine businesses and public-sector organizations, begins with registration from 8-8:30 a.m. in the Bixler Art and Music Center. The program runs through lunch, where Governor John Baldacci will present the 2005 Maine Governor's Awards for Business Excellence.

In the award-winning documentary The Corporation, Anderson recalls his environmental epiphany. "One day, early in this journey, it dawned on me that the way I've been running Interface is the way of the plunderer," he said, "plundering something that's not mine, something that belongs to every creature on earth." Since then, he has led the charge in sustainable business, winning countless awards from the environmental community and beyond.

Four Maine leaders in sustainable business practices will join for a panel discussion moderated by Nancy Artz of the University of Southern Maine’s School of Business. Panelists include Kevin Hancock of Hancock Lumber, Mac McCabe of the O’Naturals restaurant chain, Elizabeth Sheehan of Coastal Enterprises Inc., and Dave Walker of Interface Fabrics.

Governor Baldacci will present the Governor’s Awards for Business Excellence to Maine companies that have demonstrated a consistently high level of commitment to their community, to their employees, and to manufacturing or service excellence.

The registration fee is $50. Registration is open and can be completed through a secure online form available at http://www.colby.edu/spec.prog/other/leadership.
