Debate on Privatization of Social Security at Colby
As part of the national debate spurred by President Bush's plan to privatize social security, two experts will go head-to-head on the topic in a Cotter Debate at Colby College on Sunday, April 3, at 4:30 p.m. in room 100 of the Lovejoy Building on the Waterville campus. The event is free and the public is invited.
Moderated by Eric Rosengren, senior vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a 1979 Colby graduate, the debate between Andrew Samwick, director of Dartmouth's Nelson A. Rockefeller Center, and Steven Sass, associate director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, is sure to shed light onto this timely and important subject.
Samwick has served on the staff of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and has taught at Dartmouth since 1994. He is a specialist in social security reform and has written articles for journals such as The American Economic Review and The Journal of Political Economy.
Sass was an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and founding editor of the bank's quarterly economics magazine,The Regional Review. He wrote a history of the U.S. private pensions, The Promise of Private Pensions (Harvard, 1997).
Rosengren, who has been with the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston since 1985, has written numerous articles on macroeconomics, international banking, bank supervision, and risk management. His work has appeared in journals such as the American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Finance, and Journal of International Economics.
