Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium April 28-29; Keynote Address April 27

The sixth annual Colby College Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 27-29, on the Waterville campus. Sandra Steingraber, an ecologist and author, will give the keynote address, "Contaminated Without Consent: A Human Rights Approach to Environmental Health," at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, in room 1 of the Olin Science Center. On Thursday and Friday more than 100 students will make presentations on research they have conducted in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary studies. All symposium events are open to the public and free of charge.

Streingraber is an internationally recognized expert on the environmental links to cancer and reproductive health. She has written several books, including Living Downstream: An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment and has co-authored a book on ecology and human rights in Africa, The Spoils of Famine. Currently, Streingraber is a visiting scholar at Ithaca University and her new memoir, Having Faith: An Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood, explores her own pregnancy and an investigation of fetal toxicology.

On Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. and on Friday morning from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., students will present research across academic disciplines. Papers range from regional topics, reports on work with Waterville's social service agencies, for example, to analyses on a global scale, such as a struggle for representation in Venezuela. Research posters from all disciplines also will be on display, with students available to answer questions from noon to 2 p.m. on both days.

Colby emphasizes research and project-based learning throughout its academic programs, and the Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium is an outgrowth of the National Science Foundation's AIRE Grant, which recognized the College's leadership in this area.

For a detailed event schedule and more than 100 abstracts of research being presented, visit the symposium Web page at http://www.colby.edu/sturesearch/ressymposium/.
