Colby Presents Comic Theater in Two One-Person Shows
 Physical comedians Julie Goell and Avner the Eccentric will each present one-person shows at Colby next weekend. Goell will present Opening Night Carmen, a one-woman "Mopera," on Friday, September 9, at 7:30 p.m. Avner will perform Exceptions to Gravity on Saturday, September 10, at 7:30 p.m. Both shows are in the Strider Theater, Runnals Building, on the Waterville campus.
In Opening Night Carmen, the powder room matron of the opera house takes to the stage in this zany and delightful production of Bizet�s Carmen. With nothing more than mops and brooms and a dusty old double bass, Goell takes the audience on a romp among the sacred cows of the Opera. Singing the highlights in a superb voice, Goell stages this popular tragedy of love and betrayal using the contents of a utility closet.
Goell, Colby's Irving D. Suss Visiting Guest Artist, grew up in Rome, Italy, where she learned from the masters of Commedia Dell�Arte. After graduating from Emerson College, she taught physical comedy and mime at Teatro Studio in Rome, and she has worked in European theatre, film and television. In 2002 she completed a music performance degree in double bass at the University of Southern Maine.
 In Exceptions to Gravity, Avner Eisenberg defies definition. Avner has delighted crowds in cities across America and around the world with a fun-filled show that celebrates the comedy of life -- complete with pratfalls and unexpected triumphs. Whether trying to balance a precarious tower of paper cups, stop his hat from flying off or simply getting into a tangle of twisted limbs, Avner projects an image of humanity that is deeply touching and wildly hilarious.
Avner earned a degree in theatre from the University of Washington and attended Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris from 1971-1974. On returning to the United States, he taught at Carlo Clementi's Dell'Arte School of Physical Comedy in California. His one-man show, Avner the Eccentric, was a hit of the 1984-85 Broadway season.
Both performances run approximately 75 minutes and are suitable for adults and accompanied children ages 8 and older. General admission is $3; students and seniors are $2.
