Shakespeare Festival at Colby, October 12-14

Shenandoah Shakespeare's Blackfriars Stage Company brings a professional touring troupe to Colby College's Strider Theater, Wednesday through Friday, October 12-14, to present Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, Richard III, and Return to the Forbidden Planet.

Wednesday, October 12
Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Jaq Bessell
One of Shakespeare's most delightful comedies, Much Ado About Nothing delivers the witty tongue-lashings of the upper crust, as well as the broad farce of the lower class. As the villain Don John devises a scheme to shatter the wedding of young lovers Claudio and Hero, the friends of Beatrice and Benedick conspire to trick them into admitting their much-denied love for one another. Shakespeare shapes the ominous and light-hearted deceptions with cleverness and charm while he keeps the laughter coming.

Thursday, October 13
Richard III, directed by Joyce Peifer
Thought to be Shakespeares first big box-office smash, Richard III chronicles the cataclysmic end of Englands greatest power struggle, The Wars of the Roses, which pitted Richards House of York against the House of Lancaster. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, takes the audience into his confidence as he plots to kill everyone before him in line for the throne. Tony Soprano could only envy the panache of Richards villainous ascent to power.

Friday, October 15
Return to the Forbidden Planet, directed by Jim Warren
Imagine that American Bandstand, Star Trek, and William Shakespeare were involved in a disastrous transporter malfunction, and the result at the other end was a combination of all three. Thats just part of the fun of Shakespeares long lost rock 'n' roll masterpiece, Return to the Forbidden Planet. Rock 'n' roll music, a sci-fi fantasy, and dialogue from the greatest plays ever written will keep you laughing and jamming profoundly through the cosmos.

An internationally acclaimed theater company, Shenandoah Shakespeare seeks to make Shakespeare accessible to all, through its performances and extensive education programs. The company has toured 48 states, five foreign countries, and one U.S. territory since its 1988 inception.

Tickets are $3 for general admission and $2 for students and seniors. For ticket information, call the box office at 859-4535 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday the week of the performance.
