Colby Presents Jazz Band Concert Saturday, November 5
Colby College will present a jazz band performance on Saturday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. The concert is open to the public free of charge.
The Jazz Band concert, "The School of Cool Had a Baby," will feature music of Count Basie, one of the greatest jazz band leaders of the Swing era and dean of the "School of Cool." The band will perform "Shine on Harvest Moon," "Sugar," "Swingin' the Blues," "One O'Clock Boogie," and "Brand New Wagon." It will also offer West Coast stylings and instrumentation (featuring flute and French horn) of arrangers Tadd Dameron, Claude Thornhill, Gil Evans, and Gerry Mulligan. The band will further explore the West Coast school with the Modern Jazz Quartet tunes "Two Bass Hit" and "Django," segue into the modal world of Miles Davis with "So What," "My Favorite Things," and "Impressions," and round off the night with a touch of the Jazz Messengers' school of Hard Bop. The Colby Jazz Band is directed by Eric Thomas.
