Colby Presents Italian Comedy, Servant of Two Masters All the best-laid plans were made to go awry in Servant of Two Masters, a timeless comedy running Thursday-Saturday, November 17-19, at 7:30 p.m. in Strider Theater, on the Colby campus.
Written in 1745, Carlo Goldoni's Servant of Two Masters broke Italian theatrical tradition by unmasking the actors. In another radical first, Goldoni "borrowed" from the improvised commedia dell'arte -- traveling Italian comedy troupes -- writing a scripted scenario. The result is one of the finest farces ever written, a superb classic of Italian literature, according to Colby's Irving Suss Guest Artist Julie Goell, who adapted and directed the play. Servant of Two Masters features Colby students and a live 17th-century-style rock band from Colby's music department. While the play is being staged, the Colby College Museum of Art will display original 17th-century etchings of commedia dell'arte characters by artist Jacques Callot in the cases of the Bixler Art and Music Center. Tickets are $2 with Colby I.D. and for seniors; $3 general admission. Box office is open Monday through Saturday during the week of the performance from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Download a high-resolution image at: http://author.colby.edu/news_events/prphotos/servant.cfm Colby College Theater and Dance |
