Colby Symphony Orchestra Presents Annual December Concert

The Colby Symphony Orchestra will present its annual December concert on Saturday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

Selections will include Overture to Oberon by Carl Maria von Weber; Symphony No. 8 ("Unfinished") by Franz Schubert; Johann Sebastian Bach's Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, featuring Lee Humphreys on flute and Graybert Beacham on violin; Huapango by Mexican composer Jose Pablo Moncayo, and the ever popular "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson.

The orchestra is under the direction of Visiting Assistant Professor Marshall Fulbright and guest conductor Stephen Planas '06. Fulbright arrived at Colby this year after recently completing a teaching and managerial assignment at the Interlochen Summer Arts Academy in Michigan. Prior to that, he was the artistic operations coordinator with the Pacific Symphony in Santa Ana, California, and served as the assistant conductor of the Orange County Youth Symphony. He has studied conducting with some of the most prestigious teachers and at some of the most renowned conducting institutions in the country, including the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen.

Stephen Planas '06 is making his third appearance as a guest conductor of the Colby Symphony Orchestra. Planas has studied conducting while at Colby and attended the Conductors Institute at Bard College for two summers.

Flutist Lee Humphreys, an international performing artist, has served as the principal flute with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Orquesta Filarmonica de Caracas and studied with Harold Bennett, Hendrik deVries, Nelson Hauenstein, and Jean Pierre Rampal. She is the applied music associate in flute at Colby, principal flute in the Colby Symphony Orchestra, and director of the flute choir.

Graybert Beacham has been active as a violinist, violist, conductor, and teacher, most recently at the University of Maine at Farmington and at the Emery Community Arts Center String Program, where he serves as director of string studies. As a violinist and violist, he has performed as concertmaster, soloist and in principal positions with orchestras and festivals throughout the United States and Mexico. He is a founding member of the Nordica Trio. Beacham is concertmaster of the Colby Symphony Orchestra.
