Mother of Hate-Crime Victim to Speak at Colby

Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old man from Wyoming who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in 1998, will speak at Colby College on Wednesday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Page Commons of Cotter Union, on the Waterville campus.

Matthew Shepard's death moved thousands of people around the world to attend vigils and rallies in his honor. Determined to prevent their son's fate from befalling others, his parents established the Matthew Shepard Foundation to carry on their son's legacy by embracing the causes he had championed. This includes working for gay and lesbian equality, hate crime legislation, and raising awareness using programs developed by the Foundation.

Mrs. Shepard speaks to audiences nationwide about what they can do as individuals and communities to make this world a more accepting place for everyone regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression.
