Pianist Performs Music by Composers of African Descent

Internationally recognized concert pianist William Chapman Nyaho, a native of Ghana, will offer a concert of works that embrace African and African-American history and culture on Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Colby's Lorimer Chapel. The annual Strider Concert, part of the Music at Colby series, is free and open to the public.

Nyaho performs music by composers of African descent, from Nigeria and Jamaica to England and Egypt. While the structure of these pieces reveals Western influences, the melodies, rhythms, and harmonies reveal the African roots.

In her comments for Nyaho's recently released CD, Senku, Maya Angelou wrote: "Chapman Nyaho's magnificent courage can be seen in his willingness to find the music, to select the music, and then offer the music to an audience, which for the most part, had never heard of these composers. … Listeners … should not be surprised if they start whistling the melodies, immediately."

Nyaho is a graduate of Oxford University, the Conservatoire de Musique de Geneve, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. The Seattle Times called Senku "a kaleidoscope of brilliant piano colors."
