James S. Terhune Named Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Colby

Colby President William D. Adams has announced the selection of James S. Terhune, of Hamilton, N.Y., to be the college's next vice president for student affairs and dean of students. Terhune's appointment will become official when it goes before Colby's board of trustees at its meeting in May.

Terhune is currently dean of student affairs at Colgate University, where he oversees a wide variety of departments and programs, including administrative advising, the ALANA (Asian, Latina/o, African American, and Native American) Cultural Center, career services, the first-year student program, the Sophomore Year Experience program, student discipline, campus safety, counseling and psychological services, fraternity/sorority affairs, residential education, international student programs, the Center for Leadership & Student Involvement, and student health services.

Terhune joined the Colgate student services staff in 1991, after serving as assistant to the dean of the college and assistant director of student activities at Middlebury College. He is a 1986 graduate of Middlebury and holds a master's in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

"Jim Terhune brings extraordinary personal strengths and professional experience to this important position," Adams said. "He is deeply committed to the mission of the residential liberal arts college, and he understands the many ways in which life outside the classroom reinforces and deepens the educational experience. Students will find him easy to approach; faculty will admire his vision of student life; and administrative colleagues will appreciate his leadership abilities. We will be lucky to have him."

At Colby, Terhune will succeed Janice Kassman, who will become special assistant to the president for external affairs. He will oversee most non-academic areas of student life and will be a member of the president's cabinet. He takes up his duties at Colby in July.

Terhune and his wife, Marnie, have two children.
