Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium May 3-5; Keynote Address May 3

The seventh annual Colby College Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held Wednesday through Friday, May 3-5, on the Waterville campus. More than 100 students will make presentations on research they have conducted in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary studies. All symposium events are open to the public and free of charge.

Sociologist Robert D. Bullard will give the keynote address, "Environmental Justice for All" at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, in room 1 of the Olin Science Center. A sociology professor at Clark Atlanta University, Bullard is the founder of the school's Environmental Justice Resource Center and the author of 12 books, including Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class, and Environmental Quality and The Quest for Environmental Justice: Human Rights and the Politics of Pollution. Round-the-clock images of the human toll of Hurricane Katrina forced long-ignored issues of race and class into America’s living rooms -- and brought Bullard's decades-long struggle for environmental justice to the forefront.

All day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, students will present research across academic disciplines. Papers range from regional topics, such as predicting moose-vehicle collisions and economic determinants of obesity in Maine, to analyses on a global scale, such as healthcare for the elderly in China and climate change. Issues in American culture include the economics of hip-hop culture, video games and social anxiety, and brand management and the Wal-Mart model.

Research posters from all disciplines also will be on display, with students available to answer questions from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

Colby emphasizes research and project-based learning throughout its academic programs, and the Colby Undergraduate Research Symposium is an outgrowth of the National Science Foundation's AIRE Grant, which recognized the College's leadership in this area.
