Colby Wellness Lectures Open to Public

At Colby College in Waterville, a series of wellness lectures in 2001 will address topics of mental, emotional, social and physical well-being. Lectures are open to the public and are free of charge. Programs will discuss eating disorders, AIDS, humor and more. All lectures will be held in the Page Commons Room in Cotter Union. For information contact Colby’s health center at 207-872-3058.

Lectures scheduled for January and the spring semester include:

Tues., Jan. 23, at 8 p.m.
"AIDS and People Like Us" with Bill Klein
Lecture by psychology professor focuses on how people think about AIDS and what implications there are for successful behavioral intervention. Includes a screening of the film "People Like Us."

Wed., Feb. 7, at 8 p.m.
"Appetite for Destruction" with River Huston
Through slides and narrative, recovering starver/binger Huston explores the relationships between media, peer pressure, family and the predominance of eating disorders in our culture.

Tues., Feb. 13, at 8 p.m.
"Hands Off, Let’s Talk—Sex, Conflict and Intimacy" with Bob Hall
Program focuses on rethinking traditional male and female gender roles, examining the factors that influence personal values and sexual expectations, discussing use and abuse of alcohol and drugs in relationships and exploring belief systems.

Tues., Feb. 20, at 8 p.m.
"Life Choices" with Colby Career Services
Panel discussion on how career choices can affect other life choices.

Wed., Mar. 7, at 8 p.m.
"Date Smart" with David Coleman
Program about building a strong foundation from which one can enter and maintain healthy relationships.

Wed., Mar. 14, at 8 p.m.
"Humor…A Miracle Cure!" with Curtis Zimmerman
Program by lecturer, mime, juggler and celiac disease survivor offers insights and practical tools to incorporate humor into daily life. **This lecture was originally scheduled for January 16.**
