Portland String Quartet at Colby on Feb. 11

The Portland String Quartet will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Art of Fugue on Sunday, February 11, at Colby College in Waterville. The concert begins at 3 p.m. in Lorimer Chapel and is part of the 2000-01 Music at Colby concert series. It is open to the public and free of charge.

The program, commemorating the 250th anniversary of Bach’s death in 1750, will feature The Art of Fugue, Bach’s final systematic collection of fugues and canons. The first half of the program will feature Contrapuncti I-VII and the second half of the program will feature Contrapuncti VIII-XIV. Eva Linfield, associate professor of music, will provide a brief explanation of this significant work at the beginning of the concert.

The Portland String Quartet is composed of violinists Stephen Kecskemethy and Ronald Lantz, violist Julia Adams, and cellist Paul Ross. The ensemble has played together with the same personnel since 1969 and has established a reputation for strong performances on its national and international tours. Their recordings on the Arabesque and Northeastern labels have won a variety of honors including "Best Recording" designations by The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Boston Globe. The musicians are artists-in-residence at Colby and have conducted a string quartet institute, now located on the Colby campus, for the last 25 summers.
