Colby Celebrates Black History Month Colby will celebrate Black History Month with a month-long film festival series"The Politics of Black Manhood in the Films of Denzel Washington," and a lecture, "The Eclipse of a Black Public," by Bowdoin Professor Eddie Glaude on February 27. All events are open to the public free of charge. Black History Month grew out of "Negro History Week," begun in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and tied to the birthday of Frederick Douglass. Events at Colby celebrating black history include:
