Colby Announces Spring Visiting Writers Series Colby College’s 2000-01 Visiting Writers Series will hold a poetry and a nonfiction reading this spring on the Waterville campus. Each program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Robinson Room of Miller Library and is open to the public free of charge. A book signing by the author will follow each of the readings. The Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by Colby’s creative writing program. On Tuesday, March 13, Cleopatra Mathis will read selections of her poetry. Her most recent book, What to Tip the Boatman?, will be published in March 2001. Mathis’s other collections of poetry include Aerial View of Louisiana, The Bottom Land, The Center for Cold Weather and Guardian. She is described by Stanley Kunitz as "a poet of place, with a talismanic attachment to the natural world." Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Antaeus and other magazines. Mathis has received numerous awards and grants, including The Robert Frost Award, a fellowship from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. A resident of New Hampshire, Mathis is a professor of English and creative writing at Dartmouth College. On Monday, April 9, nonfiction writer and 1979 Colby graduate Jocelyn Bartkevicius will read from The Emerald Room, a memoir about growing up in a burlesque nightclub during the rise of feminism. Her essays have been published in such journals as The Hudson Review, Iowa Woman and The Missouri Review, and recognized in The Best American Essays anthology. Bartkevicius teaches creative writing at The University of Central Florida in Orlando where she is nonfiction editor of The Florida Review. This reading is co-sponsored by the Edwin J. Kenney Memorial Nonfiction Reading Program. |
