Judge Guido Calabresi To Receive the First
The award was established to recognize a federal or state judge who demonstrates the qualities of integrity, compassion, humanity and judicial excellence—all qualities exhibited by the Honorable Morton Brody, a U.S. District Court judge in Maine who passed away in March 2000. Brody, a long-time Waterville resident, had taught courses at Colby on the judicial system and was a friend of the College for many years. Judge Calabresi was born in Italy and, as a child in 1939, immigrated to the United States with his family for political reasons. Prior to his appointment in 1994 as U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit, he was Dean and Sterling Professor at the Yale Law School, where he continues to serve as a member of the faculty. Judge Calabresi earned a B.S. and an LL.B. degree at Yale as well as a B.A. (as a Rhodes Scholar) and an M.A. at Oxford University. After graduating first in his class from Yale Law School, he clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black in 1958-59 before returning to Yale to teach. He has written four books, including A Common Law for the Age of Statutes (Harvard University Press 1982) and Ideals, Beliefs, Attitudes and the Law: Private Law Perspectives on a Public Law Problem (Syracuse University Press 1985), both of which won American Bar Association book awards. Judge Calabresi’s 8 p.m. lecture on Wednesday, April 18, will be in Colby’s Given Auditorium and is open to the public. The Brody Award selection committee is chaired by Brock Hornby, chief judge of the Federal District Court in Maine, and includes distinguished active and retired judges, lawyers, legal educators, representatives of the College and a member of the Brody family. |

Colby College in Waterville, Maine, has named United States Circuit Judge Guido Calabresi of New Haven, Conn., the inaugural recipient of the Morton A. Brody Distinguished Judicial Service Award. On April 18 Judge Calabresi will receive the award, as well as an honorary doctor of laws degree, and will deliver a lecture at Colby.
