CBB Diversity Conference at Colby, March 9-10 "What Are You Saying?" a conference on race, religion and sexuality sponsored by the students of Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges, will be held at Colby College in Waterville March 9-10. Program highlights include a keynote address by actor and activist Danny Glover at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10. Performances, lectures and conference workshops will be held throughout the weekend. Workshop topics include interracial relationships, alcohol use, the origins of hip-hop, practicing religion on a college campus, sexual preferences and more. All events listed are open to the public free of charge. On Friday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. a performance by the dance group Step Afrika! will kick off the conference. The event will be in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Step Afrika! is a collaborative project between artists from the United States and the South African-based Soweto Dance Theatre. The project celebrates the African-American fraternity and sorority art form of stepping and its link to traditional South African dance. Step Afrika! will be followed by Two Tongues. This slam-poetry quartet explores art, activism and the history of Asian people in America, and fights ignorance and racism through spoken-word performances. In 2000 Two Tongues was listed among the most influential Asian Americans by A. Magazine. On Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. actor Danny Glover will present the keynote address of the conference. The lecture will be held in the Page Commons Room of Cotter Union. Glover has been involved in civil rights and humanitarian efforts his entire life—tutoring inner-city children, coordinating reading centers and becoming affiliated with the Black Panthers in college. In 1999 Glover filed a formal complaint with the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission alleging that taxi drivers refused to pick him up based on his race and asking the commission to review its diversity training. He is the star of such films as The Color Purple, the Lethal Weapon series and Places in the Heart. |
