International Urban Designer to Lecture at Colby, April 3 Urban designer, planner and theoretician Michael Sorkin will deliver the 31st annual Clara M. Southworth Lecture at Colby College in Waterville on Tuesday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Given Auditorium of the Bixler Art and Music Center. Sorkins lecture "The City After Now" is open to the public free of charge. Sorkin is head of the Michael Sorkin Studio in New York City, a design practice devoted to practical and theoretical projects on all scales with a special interest in city planning. Recent projects include master-planning in Hamburg and Schwerin, Germany, planning for a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem, campus planning at the University of Chicago, and studies of the Manhattan waterfront, a theater complex in Taiwan, and a "green village" in Japan. Sorkins studio is the recipient of several awards, including three I.D. Awards and a Progressive Architecture Award. Sorkin received his architectural training at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is professor of architecture and director of the Graduate Urban Design Program at New Yorks City College. Previously he was professor of urbanism and director of the Institute of Urbanism at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Sorkin is currently contributing editor at Architectural Record, I.D. and Metropolis magazines. |
